PANDEMIC UPDATE

WE HAVEN’T BEEN SILENT – JUST BUSY!

Yes, we were devastated to cancel the Passion of Joan of Arc, a project that we have been planning for several years. And we were equally devastated to cancel the last concert of the 2019-2020 season, Summer Rain, a program that would have showcased our favourite pieces from 10 years of concerts. BUT as an organization that has built a reputation for innovative and unique performances, we are looking into the future with wide-open eyes and creative minds!

SIZE DOESN’T MATTER – but flexibility does, and as a smaller ensemble we’re able to fit into places you wouldn’t expect. We have created an exciting 2020-2021 season that includes live stream concerts of some of your favourite annual programs as well as a couple of new events! With professional audio and multi-camera production you’ll be able to experience Vox Humana in a way like never before. As soon as we can have you over, in person, we will, but in the meantime we are excited for you to see and hear us, up-close and from the comfort of your home.

WHAT ELSE ARE WE DOING, YOU ASK? Well, we’ve been very busy and here’s what we have coming up:

  • DIGITAL LIBRARY We have been building a digital library of curated audio and video recordings from the past decade and will be making these available to you online shortly. Some of your favourite concerts including Vox in the Stars and numerous commissioned works will be available.
  • VIRTUAL CHOIR Our singers have been busy practicing their Russian and our technical guru has been compiling dozens of videos to create a virtual choir performance of Rachmaninoff’s Bogoroditse Devo, which we will be sending to you soon.
  • INTERVIEW SERIES In early June we are launching a live interview series with composers from around the world. Every 2-3 weeks our Artistic Director Brian Wismath, will introduce you to the composers whose compositions we have commissioned and featured over the years. You will get to hear about their compositional process, inspiration and even ask them questions – in real time!
  • NEW COMPOSITION Last, but certainly not least, we have teamed up with composer Chris Sivak to create a new audio and video composition that will include an infinite number of singers, and most importantly, you! Inspired by the profound impact of COVID-19 on the world, Chris Sivak has composed music to Walt Whitman’s text “On the Beach at Night Alone” featuring submissions by Vox Humana, singers from all over the world, as well as the general public.
  • HOW DOES IT WORK?
What do you notice differently since the pandemic began? Perhaps you notice the sound of a bird, or an empty bench, or the space between people? Next time you do, take a picture or a video, or better yet, write a few words about it. We want to include this in the composition. Are you a singer? If so, we have music for you to record and send to us and we’ll make it part of the composition as well! In a few days we will be launching a new section of the website with detailed information about this project and all the info you need to participate!

WE CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU!
Like many Arts organizations, we are unable to predict the future, but if we could we’d share it with you! For now, we are planning for a lean year financially, and with careful planning we are confident that we can pull through – but not without your help. To help Vox Humana continue to provide high quality performances of choral music, whether in person or through live streaming, please consider making a tax deductible donation. Any amount will have a real impact on our ability to persevere during this challenging time. Donations can be made online at: Canadahelps.org or by mailing a cheque to:
